Today we got up really, really early and caught a plane to Sofia in Bulgaria. But when we got there, we had a problem! The man at the check point said mum and dad needed a visa because they had a red passport and not a blue one. Mum said she looked on the internet and it said Australians did not need a visa to get into Bulgaria but the man reckoned we did. We had to sit outside a jail with people in it for an hour and half as the man tried to sort the problem out. I was not sure if we would get into Bulgaria, but in the end we were OK to go.

Once we got out, we went to our apartment and had something to eat and a rest time. Then we went sight-seeing and these were my favourite places that we went to: The "Onion" church (St. Nikolai Church), which is a Russian church, Alexander Nevski Cathedral, St. George's Rotunda and the National Opera.
St. George's Rotunda
The National Opera
The Russian church was beautiful. It had seven domes that looked like onions and if you look at the photos, they are all gold. Inside, they were working on the paintings, but I could see they were beautiful as well. Inside was really different to the churches I remember from Australia.

Alexander Nevski Cathedral was beautiful. On the outside there were heaps of different shapes to look at as well as an amazing shiny, gold dome. Inside was really dark but there were heaps of beautiful pictures. But you couldn't take photos so I can't show you what it was like. We also went to the crypt to look at some more pictures but Pat and Bridget touched a couple of things and a woman (Mum called her "Helga" but I don't think that was her name) got cranky at us so we decided to leave.

Dad found what to me sounded like a random restaurant to go and eat some Bulgarian food. We caught a tram and then had to walk down a street until we found it. I had a chicken shish kebab because Bulgarian food is similar to Turkey food-which I like! Mum and Dad had weird Bulgarian food. I think dad ate deer and mum had some chicken thing. They said they liked it and the man who served us was really nice to us. Then we walked home and ate some yummy ice cream!

So far, I really like Sofia. Tomorrow we are going to Plovdiv and mum and dad says it is a long drive so I'm not sure that will be too much fun!

Your adventures certainly continued!!!!!!!!! It sounds like you almost did not make it into Bulgaria - you all looked so sad sitting outside the gaol.
ReplyDeleteBut it sounds like the delicious food and the great places you visited made up for it. Glad you enjoyed your kebab, Clare (and the icecreams).
So glad you made to Bulgaria - Mum and Dad must have been a bit worried sitting there in detention. Mum and Dad's food does look a little strange but probably tasted great. Good to know you are also trying some different foods, including yummy icecream. The Russian church looks very beautiful. Keep up the good work! We just love it!
