Belgrade, Serbia 7.9.13

Yesterday we drove from Sofia to Belgrade, which is in Serbia. We got let out of Bulgaria which made us all happy!!

So...today we were in Serbia and we stayed in the capital of Serbia which is Belgrade! We really only had one day here so we tried to fit as much in as we could. That meant that the day was very long and tiring!

The places we went to were: St. Sava Church, Parliament House, the Old and New Palace, Kalemegdan Fort (where there were heaps of weddings), St. Petka's Church and a Serbian restaurant for dinner (you wouldn't believe it!!).

St. Sava's Church was completely different from other churches we have seen so far (so many...) because in Turkey and Bulgaria all the walls had pictures or murals on them. This one had nothing for two reasons: 1. they were doing some work on the church and 2. it was just how it was. I don't know why it was like that but it just was.

The next place we went to (by tram) was Parliament House. We couldn't get in because it was only for the government but it still looked amazing. The weather has been unreal and it is not sticky at all so Bridget's hair has gone all straight!! We walked all over because the day was so nice. The old and the new palace were also beautiful but I liked the old palace way more because the new one was too shiny and the old one looked like someone's house!

We went home and had a rest and after that we caught the tram again to Kalemegdan. Pat got to drive the tram for a bit-it was a bit crazy! Kalemegdan is a massive fort and has some beautiful old churches in it too. When we walked up to one of the churches, there was someone getting married. Mum and Dad thought that it would have been a nice place to get married because the church was beautiful and the view over the river was amazing. St. Petka's had some beautiful murals but it stank and Dad said it was incense.

The fort was truly incredible because it showed all the ruins from all the people over time who had lived there and also some of the things they used to fight there. We read a sign that said because it was on the river and up high, it was an important part of the town. Pat loved one part-an old war museum that had heaps of broken down tanks, guns and cannons!

After that, we walked to a street right near our house called Skardilija. It has heaps of restaurants and bars on it. We found one restaurant and it served Serbian food which is definitely not chicken kebabs! I ate Serbian sausage. It tasted a bit spicy but it was still yummy!! We got three and shared them with the children. Mum and Dad also ate Serbian food and got a massive plate of meat. They said they would be blocked up for a week!

Yummy!!!!

Tomorrow we are going to drive to Budapest. Mum and Dad are worried about the company Dad booked with because it is from Romania, so I hope they come!

  3. Clarey your day in Belgrade was better by far than being at the "G";Poppy and I were among all these blues supporters and we were very sad but reading your news every day will lighten the load. Glad to see a change in the diet and we could imagine Paddy's excitement with the fort and driving the tram how amazing!!!!!
