The Romantic Road 22-24.9.13

The Romantic Road

On the road between Salzburg and Fussen

The Romantic Road is a famous road through the south of Germany. Over two days we traveled to many of the places along the road. The places were: Hohenschonau Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle, Fussen, Wieskirche, Pfaffenwinkel, Nordlingen, Dinklesbuhl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber!!

First we went to Hohenschonau Castle. It is a castle that is yellow and you had to get a tour or you were not allowed in! We were nearly not allowed in anyway because Daddy had booked a ticket online but when we got to the register the lady looked at the paper and told Dad that he had booked for October 22, not September!! Even Mum hadn't seen it!! But the lady was very kind and she gave us some tickets for a tour that was at a later time than Dad had booked – lucky!!

Inside the castle was interesting. Many of the rooms were smaller than other palaces we have seen but one room was very beautiful. It was the Queen's bedroom and it was made out ion traditional Turkish style. Once upon a time, the king gave her a bed from Turkey so she wanted to rest of the room to look the same as the bed. So...the carpet was designed with Turkish patterns, the pictures on the wall were in Turkish style and the fabric of the quilt was also from Turkey. There was an age difference of 18 years between the king and the queen and the king had a secret staircase down to the queen's bedroom which was a bit cheeky!

After seeing that castle we went to another one close by called Neuschwanstein. Both castles were built by the king called Ludwig and he got loads and loads of builders to make Neuschwanstein. When they were done, he moved from the yellow one to the new one and lived in that one until he died. We had to get a tour, but it didn't take very long. Inside the castle you were not allowed to take photos but I liked the colours very much because they were gold, blue and silver. The rooms were really spread out and the tour guide spoke really softly but maybe the rooms were really big or the tour group was massive and we couldn't hear very well. I do remember what she said about one room and that was that the chandelier had 92 candles in it and the paintings all around the room were the original ones from back in the who knows when!

We stayed in a cool hotel in a town near the castles called Fussen. When we got to the hotel we did what we do: we rushed in to find our beds! I chose to sleep on the sofa bed and Patrick and Bridget slept in a room together. Mum and Dad started to share but in the night Mum woke me up and asked me if she could share with me because Dad was snoring way too loud because he had been drinking beer at dinner!

The next day, Dad said we would keep driving on the Romantic Road but stop at a few mini-stops along the way. First we stopped at a church called Wieskirche. Well, it took a bit more than just going directly to it as we got lost because of the GPS and a road that was closed. Along the way, Daddy stopped to ask a lady nearby but she didn't speak any English so Dad tried to speak German!?! It sounded like he could speak it fluently but I think she thought we were Hungarians because our car had number plates from Hungary so maybe she wondered what was going on. When the lady gave Dad the directions, we eventually made our way there.

One small thing – Wieskirche is in a village called Pfaffenwinkel (Faf-an-wink-el...silent P). What a funny name for a town!! Now, back to the church. The church was beautiful and it had incredible paintings on the wall and ceiling. Bridget didn't worry about the church because she just wanted to see the cows nearby and she loved the one that had the poo all over his leg the most and she laughed about that a lot.

I loved playing on the grass when we had our picnic!

Then we went to Nordlingen. At Nordlingen we stopped for a toilet break and a coffee. We drank our drinks quickly because we didn't not have a parking ticket and we were scared that the police would come and take our car away but they didn't so PHEW! The next town was called Dinkelsbuhl. Mum and Dad kept getting out of the car to take photos but we really only drove through so we could keep going to the next place where we were going to stop for the night.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber was the next town and I thought the name sounded really cool to say. Our hotel was right next to the old town but not in it. We had rooms next to each other and Paddy and I got to sleep in a big bed in a room by ourselves! We walked around the old town and went to the main church, climbed the tower to look at the old town from above, walked along the old city walls for ages, looked at some old houses and went into a special Christmas shop that was unbelievable! You weren't supposed to take photos in there, but my naughty Dad did! Both nights we ate dinner at the same restaurant which had a special area for children to play and yummy food so that was good.

After Rothenburg we drove all the way to 't Harde in The Netherlands. Dad said it was about 600 kilometres but it didn't seem to take very long.

So...that was my story of the Romantic Road. Now we are in Holland and I will write a story about being here with Mum and Dad's friend Margot soon.

Cesky Krumlov and Salzburg

In the gardens in Salzburg

CESKY KRUMLOV and SALZBURG

Today I'm going to write a proper blog, but I will write two blogs in one!!! The two places that we went to were - Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic and Salzburg in Austria!!! First we went to Cesky Krumlov. The things that we saw there were: The Old Town  and the Castle. Then for Salzburg we went to Mozarts House,  the Dom/Cathedral, Funicular up to the castle, the Salzburg Castle, Haus-De-Natur and then The Beer Hall!!!!!!!!!!

So first in Cesky Krumlov we were following the GPS  but it took us to the middle of NOWHERE. We ended up on the castle bridge, and Daddy parked where you were not allowed to park!!! After Dad had rang the apartment/hotel 1000 times we eventually found our way to the Hotel!!! Our room was called The Attic room because, it was only one room so we all had sleep in the same
room!! Then after w got settled in, we went out and had a walk
through the Old Town!!!!!!!! Along the way we saw a shop that sold cinnamon rolls and they were YUMO!!! After we shared a cinnamon roll, we walked to the Castle where we got stuck the first time!!!

You can see the picture of the castle below. I thought that the castle looked ugly on the outside but beautiful on the inside. Dad told me that Cesky Krumlov was one of the towns that Nana liked the most and I also thought it was amazing. We stayed right in the old town and it was easy to walk around which was good.

After we had been to the castle in the morning we started driving to Salzburg. We stopped in a place called Linz which is in Austria. At Linz we waited half an hour and then caught a tram up a hill. Mum said it was the steepest tram ride in all of Europe and I am glad we didn't have to walk! When we got to the top we were going to walk around in the beautiful gardens but it was pouring with rain so we got back on the train and caught it to the bottom again!

We kept driving to Salzburg and Dad had no trouble finding the hotel because: 1. the GPS finally worked and 2. it wasn't raining anymore and 3. the hotel was really bright yellow, so it was easy to see!!! It was nearly six o'clock so Mum and Dad decided to go straight to dinner. We found a local restaurant and Mum asked if there was non-smoking but the man said no it was all booked out already. So we had to sit in the smoking room which was yuck but only one man was smoking. I ate spaghetti bolognese and we ate quickly and then got out of there. Dad washed our clothes in the shower when we got home! I don't know why people can do that!!

The next morning we caught the trolley bus in to Salzburg. It only took about 10 minutes so that was fine. We walked around and saw Mozart's house. Mozart used to be a genius with music since he was 4 years old!!  He could play nearly every instrument ever!! After that we went to an amazing church (the Dom) which had lots of gold in it. We didn't have to pay to get in but Dad gave a donation. Next we caught something called a funicular up to the Salzburg Castle. It is like a tram lift because for the most part it has the insides like a tram but it then lifts you all the way up to the tip-top of the castle.

When we got to the top, we looked out over the viewpoint and then took a walk through some of the rooms and museums in the castle as well. The little ones were getting tired, so we went back to the room for a rest. Bridget slept in the bed and Paddy had a sleep between two covers in the bathroom!! When they woke up we went to a really cool place - Haus der Natur (or the Nature Museum)!! This place had all kind of things: dinosaurs, tropical fish, fossils, stuffed animals, photos from above the earth, precious rocks and stones and heaps more. My favourite part was the science section because you got to touch and do things with all the equipment like skiing, rolling wheels, lifting heavy weights and  also spinning shapes to see what they look like. All the kids liked this place very much but we had to leave at 5 which was a bit sad!

Across the road from the museum was a park so we went for a bit of a play. Then we went looking for somewhere to eat. The lady at the hotel had told Mum and Dad about a place near the museum so we went looking for that place. It was an Austrian beer hall and it was crazy! That was its name as well - Beer Hall...what a funny name for a restaurant! At the beer hall it was different to any other restaurant I have ever been to. You had to go to shops on the outside and buy your food and then you took it inside the hall to find and table to start eating. Dad went to another room and bought some beer and apple juice for the kids and we ate dinner. Me, Patrick and Bridget ate sausage with cheese in it and mum and dad had pork ribs, potato salad and chips and BEER! It was really fun because it also didn't matter how much noise you made!!

Because we are going to lots of little places in a row now, I am writing blogs like this - many days and places in one blog. I hope that is OK but I get tired having to write each night! Next, I will write about when we drive along the Romantic Road in Germany!!
